Chuck: What Did You Think of the Last Episode?

Posted by bryansarnold Comments (0)

After five seasons and narrowly escaping being cancelled several times, Chuck has come to an end. Tonight, NBC aired the final two episodes of the underdog TV series that got a true series finale — one that you’d hope that any beloved show could get.

As promised, the finale hearkened back to the early days of the series and provided more than a few references to the early episodes. Chuck was determined, in his old geeky way, to bring Sarah back to her senses. He did but she still didn’t have her memories.

A bomb that was attached to the General’s chair at the opera house would go off as soon as the musical performance (thanks to Jeffster and Morgan conducting) stopped. Given the choice to use Intersect himself to diffuse the bomb or use it to restore Sarah’s memories, Chuck of course makes the hero’s choice. He saves the day, at the cost of losing what he’d built with his true love.

For any longtime viewer, it would be tough to hold back tears as the trio disbanded, first Casey and then Sarah left Chuck standing alone.

Still, there were plenty of happy events. The Jeffster guys are offered a big record deal with a German music company. Subway (a longtime Chuck sponsor) buys out the Buy More. How fitting. Morgan moves in with Alex. Ellie and Captain Awesome move to Chicago to work at a hospital. Casey goes after Verbanski.

The series ends with Chuck finding Sarah on their beach, still confused. He tells her that he’ll always be there for her, whatever she does and wherever she goes. She responds by asking him to tell her a story. And he does, recounting the events and details of their time together over the last five years. They share a lot of laughter and tears.

Chuck then says, “Morgan, has this crazy idea… He thinks that with just one kiss, you’ll remember everything.” She asks, “One magical kiss?”

He says, “Yeah…” Sarah quickly responds, “Chuck… kiss me.” And he does, and they kiss over and over on the beach, as the camera pulls back and the scene fades to black. End of series.

What do you think? Were you satisfied by the Chuck series finale? Was there anything missing?

Chuck: Could There Be a Follow-Up Movie?

Posted by bryansarnold Comments (0)

Now that the Chuck TV series is over, some are no doubt already wondering if the Buy More gang could return one day in a reunion movie. It’s way too soon to tell but the idea has certainly been suggested.

Amidst the series finale coverage, Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, and executive producer Chris Fedak were all asked about the possibility. Here’s what they had to say:

USA Today: As for whether this is truly the end for a show that wouldn’t die, Levi says he could see a continuation via an online film. Again, it goes back to depending on the fans.
“I genuinely believe that our fan base, if given the opportunity to spend $5 on an hour-and-a-half Chuck movie to buy online and keep, I think they would,” he says. “That would be a really fun thing to do.”

THR: What are the chances of a Chuck movie?
Yvonne Strahovski: There are always more stories to tell. I’m sure that if that idea came up, I’m sure most if not all of the cast members would probably be up to doing something like that. We love each other. We’re such a close-knit group and the crew as well. So, it’s a real community that we’ve created amongst ourselves and the fans. So, I think if it was in the cards, I think we’d all be up for it.

Huffington Post: Is there really going to be a Chuck movie? Are you guys thinking about it? (question submitted by reader “chuckfan15″)
Chris Fedak: There are no plans at the moment, but it sure would be fun. We could blow up so many Crown Victorias.

What do you think? Would you like to see a Chuck movie of some kind or do you think the series finale should be the true ending? If you’d like a movie, how long should they wait to do it? What should it be about?

‘Spartacus’: Liam McIntyre on getting nude, torching cast members and why working out sucks

Spartacus-cropped.jpgLiam McIntyre is the new Spartacus. He looks like he was born to play the role in “Spartacus: Vengeance,” which premieres Friday (January 27th). It was, however a long road to get there. “It’s been amazingly stressful and amazingly joyous,” he said of everything he’s been through since replacing the late Andy Whitfield in the show. We got to chat with McIntyre, who told us about the process, the nudity and setting his cast members on fire … almost.

When McIntyre was cast, he was really skinny and had to bulk up before they would officially offer him the role. He talked about getting ripped. “People say it’s easy, but it’s just not. It’s just fundamentally not. I was never a gym junkie before and then suddenly they’re like, ‘Your acting? Yeah, yeah, we don’t mind that. But this body, that’s got to change. So the answer to that is lifting things you can’t lift and doing it until you can lift them. Then lifting heavier things and rinse, repeat.’ I said, ‘That doesn’t sound like fun.’ They said, ‘No, it’s not fun.’ So anyone that says ‘Oh, I love training! I love sit-ups!’ I’m like, ‘Do you? Do you really?’”

We posted a story about “Spartacus” drinking games and Liam just added his to the mix. “I was actually trying to start up a drinking game on the DVD commentary. I worked out about half-way through the show that I really correct Agron (Daniel Feuerriegel) constantly. My pitch was that this should be the new drinking game.”

We had to bring up the nudity and whether or not that was a hesitation. McIntyre, who calls himself a “Spartacus” fan boy said, “Well, it’s hard to go into a show that you love, given the parameters of the show and go, ‘Well, now let’s talk about that thing that’s essentially part of the show.’ But I did certainly enjoy that first meeting where the director sits you down and goes, ‘Alright Liam. In the first episode, this is going to happen. We need to talk about what you’re comfortable with.’ I said, ‘Let’s start with nothing and work backwards,’ he laughed.

He talked about where the character is going. “It’s a very different experience in many ways. He’s gone from a person with great personal pain … and that hasn’t gone away, but now he’s gone outside this ludis and there’s a bunch of people saying how do we live, how do we eat. There’s a part of him that says, ‘Don’t look at me. I did what I had to do. Thanks for coming along.’ But then there’s the natural leader in him that keeps pushing him towards doing something. No one else can do this.”

We asked if there were any injuries on the set. McIntyre laughed, “Not legally, no. Ha! No, things happen on the set. I almost set Manu (Bennett) on fire. I didn’t! But I may nearly have. I didn’t want to. I like him. He’s very nice! We need him!” He revealed that this scene takes place in the final episode of the season.

We’ve seen the first two episodes and we love Liam! We miss Andy, of course, and McIntyre said he was incredibly supportive and encouraging. We can’t wait to hear what you think!

‘Chuck’ series finale: The end is a new beginning

chuck-series-finale-wb.jpgFive seasons, 91 episodes and countless Subway sandwiches after it began, “Chuck” came to a close Friday (Jan. 27).

The real finale that followed at least five other episodes in the show’s history that, because of its near-constant bubble status, were designed as possible series finales. Because of that, it felt like there was some real pressure on team “Chuck” to get this one right.

Mission accomplished.

The two-parter of “Chuck vs. Sarah” and “Chuck vs. the Goodbye” wasn’t perfect — there is one glaring question left hanging at the end (more on that in a bit), and you can argue with the storytelling path the series took in the couple episodes prior to this. But having chosen that road, the show delivered an emotional, somewhat bittersweet but very satisfying capper to the story of a guy who works in a Buy More and the woman who walked into his life 4 1/2 years ago. All that, and Jeffster! singing A-ha too? That’s pretty great.

Co-creator Chris Fedak said the finale would be “very callback-y,” and man was he not kidding. As Chuck accompanies Sarah to Berlin on her mission to take down Quinn, a ridiculous set of coincidences mirror their early missions together, ending with Sarah Walker in a Wienerlicious uniform for one last time. (Alas, the Orange Orange appears not to have made it to Germany yet.)

“Chuck vs. Sarah” also takes us Intersect room one more time, where Sarah shows just how much she’s reverted to her pre-Burbank self by holding a gun to Morgan to get away with the last pure version of the Intersect (or so she believes). There are a couple hints that the Sarah we’ve come to know isn’t completely gone — her rearranging of the cups in the Wienerlicious, for instance — but she’s not willing to believe Chuck’s insistences that he loves her, and she him — not even when Chuck steps in front of a bullet for her.

It leads to a pretty devastating close to the first half, when even after Casey drops off Sarah’s mission log for her to watch, and she recounts to herself the progression of her own feelings, she doesn’t come running back into his arms. She believes him, she tells Chuck, but she doesn’t feel it.

Ouch.

We then cut to two weeks later, with Sarah now hell-bent on revenge against Quinn, Casey back working for Beckman and Chuck … sleeping till 11 a.m. and on the verge of giving up. A pep talk from Morgan, Ellie and Awesome convinces him to give it one more shot, and it leads to Berlin and Chuck’s refusal to shoot to kill scotching the Quinn mission in a big, helicopter-disabling way.

The silver lining: Ellie thinks that the pristine Intersect — which Quinn hasn’t completely assembled yet — can be used to restore Sarah’s memories, and it’s here that Fedak (who wrote the finale) makes maybe the smartest possible decision of the finale.

The Intersect has been something of a magical problem-solver for “Chuck” throughout its run, but to have Ellie and Chuck’s plan work without a hitch would have been almost too easy, and I’d argue not really in the spirit of the show. Sarah fell in love with Chuck despite what the Intersect did to him, not because of it, and it’s only fitting that he’ll try to make her remember again without its help. Her willingness to listen to “our story” and the last words of the series — “Chuck, kiss me” — leaves a pretty clear impression that Sarah is having her heart opened again.

As we leave Chuck and Sarah on the beach sharing that one, we hope magical kiss, we leave “Chuck” with grace notes for all the characters: Ellie and Awesome are headed to Chicago to start promising new jobs, Morgan and Alex are moving in together, Casey is off to search for Verbanski, Jeffster! is on the verge of pop stardom in Germany* and Big Mike, the only principal to remain in the dark about the spy stuff throughout the show’s run, revels in Subway moving into the Buy More.

(*Of COURSE they’re going to be huge in Germany. Hat tip to Fedak for that specific note, because well, if Germans can love this, they can certainly love a keytar and falsetto.)

And Chuck and Sarah? Well, we think they’ll be fine, whether they do more spy work or just finally move into that house together. Which brings us to that one big question mentioned up above: Unless Ellie managed to remove it offscreen, Chuck still has the Intersect in his head as they sit on the beach. For all his talk about needing to destroy it so no one comes after him or the people he loves again, that’s a rather sizable loose end to leave hanging.

Then again, having that still be a possibility for the Season 6 that will take place in our mind is not such a bad thing.

A few other notes from the finale:

  • That was quite the one-two punch of sweet/melancholy songs to end the show. “Cruel and Beautiful World” by Grouplove played under Ellie and Chuck saying goodbye and Morgan’s chat with Chuck at the fountain, and “Rivers and Roads” by The Head and the Heart accompanied the final scene on the beach.
  • I’m not sure how it was for you when Casey hugged Chuck, but it was a little dusty here.
  • Casey also gets the funniest line of the finale when Alex and Morgan both suggest he “run to” Verbanski: “I’m a Casey. I don’t run — I stalk my prey.”
  • Speaking (again) of callbacks: Just as he did in the pilot, Chuck disarms his last bomb with the Irene Demova porn virus.
  • Zachary Levi had to do a whole lot as Chuck, from fights to comedy. I’m not sure he got full credit for how well he played the heart-on-his-sleeve aspects of the character, though. The ability he has to bare his emotions on screen served Chuck extremely well and was in full evidence tonight.

“Chuck” has been a great ride over these five seasons, and we’ll miss it. That it even got to end on its own terms is a small miracle. To have it end this well is just awesome.

What did you think of the series finale?

Chris Brown is going to the Grammys.

And he’s doing more than just making an appearance…

I’m told the singer will probably be performing. This will be Brown’s first appearance at the Grammys since he assaulted Rihanna the night before the show three years ago.

He’s up for three awards this year. Plans for a performance are still being worked out, so details are being kept very hush-hush.

It’s already been announced that Rihanna will perform with Coldplay.

But no need to worry. Brown and Rihanna were recently partying separately but at the same time at Greystone Manor in West Hollywood. Not only did they keep their distance, but Brown was also there with his girlfriend Karrueche Tran.

The Grammys will be hosted by LL Cool J and telecast live on CBS from L.A.’s Staples Center on Feb. 12. Also set to perform are Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson, Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars, Paul McCartney, the Band Perry, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, among others.

Now we want to hear from you. Psyched for Chris Brown to perform at the Grammys? Sound off below.

Sarah Jessica Parker Replacing Demi Moore in Lovelace

Same role, different Parker.

Just hours after Mary-Louise Parker‘s name was floated as a possible replacement for Demi Moore in the upcoming Lovelace, the studio has confirmed that Sarah Jessica Parker will play feminist icon Glorida Steinem.

Moore pulled out of the project this week after a scary medical emergency landed her in the hospital, where the official word was that she needed treatment for exhaustion and her overall health.

The Ghost star has since left the hospital, but her entire schedule—let alone a movie role she was supposed to start shooting ASAP—is now up in the air.

Which brings us to Parker as a somewhat surprising choice to play Steinem, who joined forces with Deep Throat star Linda Lovelace on behalf of the feminist anti-pornography movement in the early 1980s.

Parker, who’s been comfortably ensconced in much fluffier fare for the last decade, is due to start shooting on Monday in New York City.

Amanda Seyfried is playing Lovelace in the long-gestating biopic, while James Franco will embody a young Hugh Hefner. Sharon Stone, Wes Bentley, Chloe Sevigny, Peter Sarsgaard and Chris Noth (hey, reunion!) also star.

What do you think of SJP as Gloria Steinem? Sound off in the comments!
