Luck: Second Season for New HBO Series

Posted by bryansarnold Comments (0)

After airing just one episode, HBO has renewed their new TV show Luck for a second season.

Starring Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Farina and Nick Nolte, HBO aired a special preview episode of Luck in December. It attracted a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.14 million total viewers. The season officially began two nights ago with a re-airing of the pilot.

The ratings were apparently strong enough for HBO to give the go-ahead for 10 more episodes. They’ll go into production late next month and will air in January 2013.

HBO ordered just nine episodes for season one (including the pilot) and those will finish airing on March 25th.

Here’s the official press release:

HBO RENEWS “LUCK” FOR SECOND SEASON
Ten Episode Season Slated For Jan. 2013; Production Scheduled To Resume End Of Feb.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 31, 2012 – HBO has renewed the drama LUCK for a second season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. LUCK has received overwhelming critical acclaim and the first episode has a gross audience of 3.3 million viewers to date. The pickup, which is for ten episodes, is slated to air in January 2013. Production is scheduled to resume at the end of February.

From acclaimed director Michael Mann and “Deadwood” creator David Milch, LUCK is a behind-the-track look at the world of horse racing and gambling’s denizens – owners, trainers, jockeys and gamblers, whose cast is led by Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte. The series will be filmed at Santa Anita Park and various other locations.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled with the critical response to this beautiful piece of work,” said Michael Lombardo, “and we are very excited about where David and Michael plan to take these incredible characters.”

Season one regulars included Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Richard Kind, Kevin Dunn, Ian Hart, Ritchie Coster, Jason Gedrick, Kerry Condon, Gary Stevens, Tom Payne, and Jill Hennessy.

Season one credits: the executive producers of LUCK are David Milch, Michael Mann and Carolyn Strauss; co-executive producers are Henry Bronchtein and Eric Roth; Dustin Hoffman serves as producer.

What do you think? Are you glad to hear that Luck has been renewed or do you think that it should have been cancelled instead?

Hulu CEO Jason Kilar Explains the AOL-Time Warner Merger (VIDEO)

Posted by bryansarnold Comments (0)

Courtesy of some inside knowledge from Hulu CEO Jason Kilar, we now know why the execs at Time Warner thought it was a good idea to allow their company to be purchased with bubble-inflated AOL stock a dozen years ago.

Funny or Die at Five: How They Make Money — and Get Mike Tyson to Play Herman Cain for FreeHulu: Analysts Weigh in on Future of Company, CEO Jason Kilar

They were high on drugs.

Describing a scene from a technology conference that preceded the debacle that created AOL Time Warner, Kilar said Monday night: “I remember one time guys from AOL and Time Warner were there. They were out of their minds on homemade acid. Next thing you now, they wake up naked, in the middle of the desert. They don’t know where they are, and their company is merged.”

Obviously — we think — it’s just a joke.

Kilar’s revelation is made in a Funny or Die video that also stars Martha Stewart and an image of Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg streaking.

The video opened the D: Dive Into Media conference Monday night at the Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel. The conference, from the journalists at AllThingsD, runs through Tuesday and features presentations from News Corp. COO Chase Carey, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman, ESPN president John Skipper, rocker Neil Young and more.

HBO Renews ‘Luck’ for Second Season

Posted by bryansarnold Comments (0)

Luck

Horse racing drama Luck is a big winner for HBO.

‘Luck’s’ David Milch: ‘I Did My Best to Make It Accessible’Luck: TV Review

The David Milch series starring Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte has been renewed for a second season.

PHOTOS: HBO’s Premiere of ‘Luck’

After drawing 3.3 million total viewers — including replays — for its series premiere Sunday, the premium cable network has announced the renewal two days later. The figure includes the initial 1.1 million viewers who tuned in to early preview of the drama following the Dec. 29 Boardwalk Empire season finale.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at last week’s premiere party in Hollywood, creator/EP David Milch said the writers were already breaking stories for a second season and were expecting the renewal to come “within a month.”

Season two will consist of 10 episodes and is slated to air January 2013.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled with the critical response to this beautiful piece of work,” HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said in a statement announcing the news Tuesday, “and we are very excited about where David and Michael plan to take these incredible characters.”

The early renewal was expected as the series films at Santa Anita race track and would need to schedule production between the horse racing season. Production will resume at the end of February.

The early renewal follows HBO’s Game of Thrones quick pickup last year. The fantasy drama received an early second season announcement in order to accommodate its intense production demands.
