TBS Extends Conan through April 2014

TBS has extended the popular late-night series Conan through April 2014, demonstrating the network’s solid commitment to the Emmy®-nominated show and its host, Conan O’Brien.

Since premiering in November 2010, Conan has been a hit with TBS’s core audience of young adults. The show recently charted its third consecutive month of audience growth. The success of Conan also extends well beyond the show’s TBS telecasts to include widespread DVR, online and mobile viewing; interaction through Twitter, Facebook and TeamCoco.com. In the past year, Conan has conducted special events throughout the country, including a week of shows from the Beacon Theater in New York and fan art exhibits in New York City and San Diego. In June 2012, Conan will travel again, this time for a week of shows in Chicago.

“We are proud to be in business with Conan O’Brien for the long run,” said Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming for TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). “Night after night, Conan and his team have put together terrific shows that draw a young and fiercely loyal audience. As if that weren’t enough, they have also built a dynamic online presence that keeps fans engaged like no other show in late night.”

Conan O’Brien added, “I am excited to continue my run with TBS because they have been fantastic partners. This means I’ll be taping episodes of Conan well into the Ron Paul presidency.”

Conan has enjoyed three consecutive months of audience growth. In January 2012, the show was up 27% in total viewers compared to October 2011, while adults 18-34 were up 18% and adults 18-49 up 21%. Already in February, Conan is showing an additional 12% growth among adults 18-34, 11% among adults 18-49 and 8% among total viewers. In 2012, Conan has averaged 1.1 million viewers, with 407,000 adults 18-34 and 702,000 adults 18-49.

Conan O’Brien is a true powerhouse when it comes to online activity and engagement. He has amassed 5,020,000 followers on Twitter, more than any other late-night host. Video clips from Conan presented through TeamCoco.com, viral players and YouTube attracted more than 83 million video views in 2011. And the Team Coco Facebook page has drawn more than 1.8 million fans, nearly doubling the page’s January 2011 figures.

In its first year on TBS, Conan earned three Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Variety Music or Comedy Series and another for the show’s outstanding team of comedy writers. In addition, Conan O’Brien won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Talk Show Host. Meanwhile, the Team Coco website has garnered a wide array of industry recognition, including a 2011 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media and a 2011 Webby Award for Best Fan Site.

Produced by Conaco LLC, the Emmy-nominated Conan airs Monday-Thursday at 11 p.m. (ET/PT) on TBS. Jeff Ross serves as executive producer of Conan. The show originates from Stage 15 at Warner Bros. Studios.

Community, Betty White’s Off Their Rockers to Return, Bent, Best Friends Forever to Debut

Posted by bryansarnold Comments (0)

The peacock network has announced some mid-season schedule changes that include the return of Community and Betty White’s Off Their Rockers, as well as the debuts of new comedies Bent and Best Friends Forever.

Community returns on Thursday, March 15th at 8pm with the first of 12 new episodes. Creator Dan Harmon tweeted, “What you call 8:00, we call home.” It’ll be followed by 30 Rock, The Office, and Up All Night. Once the latter has finished its 24 episode season (presumably on April 12th), Parks and Recreation will return on April 19th to finish its fourth year on the air.

Bent premieres on March 21st with a pair of episodes from 9-10pm. The series will continue to run in hour blocks on March 28th and April 4th. NBC only ordered six episodes so they’ll be all used up by the 4th. Rock Center with Brian Williams will take over the timeslot after that, leading the way for the 10pm return of Law Order: Special Victims Unit on April 11th.

Once Whitney and Are You There, Chelsea? have completed their first seasons, Betty White’s Off Their Rockers returns to the schedule on Wednesday, April 4th. The reality series got a well-received preview in January. It’ll be followed by new comedy Best Friends Forever.

For additional details and descriptions of the new shows, check out the press release below:

NBC ANNOUNCES PREMIERES OF NEW COMEDIES “BENT,” “BEST FRIENDS FOREVER” AND “BETTY WHITE’S OFF THEIR ROCKERS”

“Community” Returns to Thursday Lineup on March 15

NBC’s Spring Schedule Features Highest Percentage of Original Programs in Network’s History – Only 13 Total Hours of Repeat Programming Sunday to Friday through Mid-May

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – February 21, 2012 – NBC announced the premieres of the new comedies “Bent” (March 21) and “Best Friends Forever” (April 4), as well as the comedic hidden-camera series “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers” (April 4) to its spring lineup. “Community” also will return to the Thursday schedule starting March 15.

NBC’s spring schedule features the highest percentage of original programs in the network’s history with only 13 total hours of repeat programming from Sunday to Friday through mid-May.

The announcements were made today by Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment.

“We are happy to have an unprecedented amount of original content on NBC this spring,” said Greenblatt. “‘Bent,’ ‘Best Friends Forever’ and ‘Betty White’s Off Their Rockers’ are welcome additions to the Wednesday schedule, and we know that the loyal fans of ‘Community’ will be pleased with its return to its home on Thursdays at 8:00 p.m.”

“Bent” will premiere on Wednesday, March 21 (9-9:30 p.m. ET) followed by a second episode (9:30-10 p.m. ET). The series will continue with original back-to-back one-hour blocks on Wednesday, March 28 and April 4 (9-9:30 p.m. ET and 9:30-10 p.m. ET both nights). Following the season finales of “Whitney” and “Are You There, Chelsea,” “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers” premieres on Wednesday, April 4 (8-8:30 p.m. ET) followed by “Best Friends Forever” which also debuts on Wednesday, April 4 (8:30-9 p.m. ET).

“Community” returns on Thursday, March 15 (8-8:30 p.m. ET) as NBC re-sets the night with “30 Rock” shifting to 8:30-9 p.m. (ET) followed by “The Office” (9-9:30 p.m. ET) and “Up All Night” (9:30-10 p.m. ET). “Parks and Recreation” comes back on Thursday, April 19 (9:30-10 p.m. ET) to finish its season after “Up All Night” has ended its 24-episode original season run in the time period.

“Rock Center with Brian Williams” will also move one hour later on Wednesdays (to 10-11 p.m. ET) starting March 7 for five weeks and then return to 9-10 p.m. (ET) on April 11. “Law Order: Special Victims Unit” returns with original episodes on Wednesday, April 11 (10-11 p.m. ET) leading to its season finale on May 23rd.

“Bent” is a romantic comedy about a womanizing, surfer dude contractor and his beautiful, no-nonsense, type-A client, who work together to remodel each other’s lives as they renovate her Venice, California home. The recently divorced Alex (Amanda Peet, “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”) is a high-strung lawyer who is raising her young daughter, Charlie (Joey King, “Ramona and Beezus”) as a single mom. She downsizes into a smaller house and hires charismatic Pete (David Walton, “Perfect Couples”), a free-spirited ladies’ man and recovering gambling addict who desperately needs this gig with Alex to jumpstart his life — and prove that he is no longer a screw-up.

Also starring are Margo Harshman (“Sorority Row”) and Jeffrey Tambor (“Arrested Development”). The single-camera comedy is from writer and executive producer Tad Quill (“Scrubs,” “Spin City”) and director Craig Zisk (“Nurse Jackie,” “Weeds”). The series is produced by Universal Television and Rosalita Productions Inc.

“Best Friends Forever,” from executive producer Scot Armstrong (“Old School,” “Hangover 2″), is a new comedy about old friends, new beginnings and awkward situations. Jessica St. Clair (“Bridesmaids”) and Lennon Parham (“Accidentally on Purpose”) star as Jessica and Lennon, best friends who live on opposite sides of the country with the men in their lives. When Jessica is served divorce papers, Lennon convinces her to return home to Brooklyn and back into the apartment they used to share. Soon, the girls fall into old habits: movie marathons and late-night, girl-talk sessions — none of which is good news for Lennon’s live-in boyfriend, Joe (Luka Jones, Upright Citizens Brigade). Stephen Schneider (“Happy Endings”) and Daija Owens also star.

“Best Friends Forever” is produced by Universal Television and American Work, Inc. Along with Armstrong, St. Clair, Parham, Alexa Junge (“Friends,” “United States of Tara”), Fred Savage (“Party Down”) and Ravi Nandan are executive producers. Donick Cary is consulting producer, while Keith Raskin serves as producer on the series.

After a strong sneak-peek debut in January, “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers” takes senior stereotypes and blows them out of the water with a cast of sassy septuagenarians who are hip, sexy and ready to party. America’s favorite comedy sweetheart sends a fearless band of senior citizens to the streets to pull shockingly hilarious pranks on the younger generation in this outrageously funny “hidden camera” show. In the vein of “Punk’d,” the show delivers cleverly crafted comedic stunts, candid moments and priceless reactions captured by hidden cameras. Sassy seniors are on a mission, targeting unsuspecting young “marks” with their irreverent behavior.

White, a seven-time Emmy Award winner, stars in and executive-produces the series, adapted from the hit Belgium series “Benidorm Bastards.” Chris Coelen, Matilda Zoltowski, White, Scott Hallock, Kevin Healey, Tim Van Aelst and Tim Gibbons are the executive producers of the series produced by Kinetic Content in association with Hallock Healey Entertainment.

What do you think of the schedule changes? Are you glad that Community is returning? How about the Betty White series? Will you try either of the new scripted comedies?

Another stellar week for ted and the gang with a 4.5 in the demo and 10.5 million viewers. That was down 14% in the demo from episode two but was still one of the best showings in its history. It’ll be interesting to see what happens once interest in the new Two and a Half Men starts to die down.

Episode 07-01: Monday, 9/19/11
CBS gave us a double dose for the season premiere. The first installment attracted a 4.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 11 million viewers. That was easily the sitcom’s best premiere and improved over last season’s by 31% in the demo (3.6) and 25% in total viewers (8.79 million).

Reference point: The 2010-11 season averaged a 3.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 8.65 million viewers.

Note: These ratings are collected by the Nielsen company and are the final national numbers. These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings and are reported on by most other outlets. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.

What do you think? Do you like the How I Met Your Mother TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or continue for a ninth season?

As expected, episode two dropped quite a bit. It scored a 4.6 in the demo and 11.75 million viewers, a decline of 35% in the 18-49 category. However, this sitcom is still doing very well and built on its How I Met Your Mother lead in.
Season average: 5.8 in the demo and 15.56 million viewers.

Episode 01-01: Monday, 9/19/11
The premiere aired at 9:30pm, following the much-anticipated premiere of Two and a Half Men with Aston Kutcher. In that plum position, 2 Broke Girls had a huge debut with a 7.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 19.37 million viewers. That represents an 82% demo improvement over the debut of Mike Molly one year earlier.

Between the first and second 15 minutes of the program, 2 Broke Girls only lost 11% in the demo ratings. That seems reasonable considering the event nature of the lead-in. The numbers will naturally come down quite a bit for the second episode but the premiere received a very strong sampling. It was a really positive start.

Do you like the 2 Broke Girls TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?

44 Ending or Cancelled TV Shows for the 2011-12 TV Season

Posted by bryansarnold Comments (0)

Has your favorite TV show been cancelled? Will it be back for the 2012–2013 TV season? If your favorite is on the list below, you have our condolences.

This list encompasses shows that have been cancelled so far, covering those that have gotten the ax (or walking papers) between June 1, 2011 and May 31, 2012. In some cases, the last episodes of some shows aired months earlier but the network didn’t get around to canceling the series until later. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, try the 2010–2011 listings, the 2009–2010 listings, or maybe you’ve gotten lucky!

Now, let’s take a moment to bow our heads and remember these fallen TV series…

Against the Wall (Lifetime)
This family cop drama didn’t catch on with a large enough audience so it was canned after one season on the air. The last episode aired in September.

Allen Gregory (FOX)
Co-created by and starring Jonah Hill, this animated series aggravated lots of people but didn’t keep enough of them coming back week after week. FOX aired all seven episodes and there won’t be any more.

Bored to Death (HBO)
Starring Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis and Ted Danson, this show revolves around a man with writers block. The ratings dropped a lot in season three so HBO opted not to give it a fourth season.

Blue Mountain State (Spike TV) NEW
There won’t be a fourth season of the football comedy as the cable channel has decided to focus on reality programming.

Breaking Bad (AMC)
Walter and Jesse have been given their walking papers. The final 16 episodes will finish airing in either in 2012 or 2013.

Camelot (Starz)
The ratings weren’t great and there would have been production challenges in making a second season so the cable channel pulled the plug. The drama lasted 10 episodes.

CHAOS (CBS)
A comedic action series, this show was delayed until late in the season. When it finally debuted, few noticed. CBS burned off most of the episodes on Saturday nights.

Charlie’s Angels (ABC)
The original series was a big success for ABC but this one flopped. Production was shut down after eight episodes and the show was cancelled.

Chuck (NBC)
Has there ever been a time when this TV show wasn’t in danger of being cancelled? NBC decided to renew it for a fifth and final season of 13 episodes, giving the cast and crew ample time to craft a series finale.

The Closer (TNT)
Kyra Sedgwick supposedly made the decision to end this top-rated series after seven seasons on the air. Though Brenda Leigh Johnson will depart, some of the characters will continue in a spin-off called Major Crimes.

Combat Hospital (ABC)
This series was a disappointment for the network and they only aired 12 of the 13 episodes. They cancelled the show and Shaw Media, who produces the show, couldn’t find another American outlet to help pay for a second season.

Desperate Housewives (ABC)
Rather than wait until the ratings dropped any further, the network has agreed to close down Wisteria Lane after eight seasons on the air.

Ebert Presents: At the Movies (PBS)
Continuing the format of film criticism that was made popular by Ebert and Gene Siskel, this weekly program reviews a number of new and classic films. It didn’t find enough financial support and ended up being put on hiatus.

Eureka (Syfy)
Based on the ratings, this show was apparently too expensive to continue producing. The fifth and final season will air in mid-2012. After the cancellation announcement came down, the cable channel ordered an additional episode to allow Eureka some sort of proper finale.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (ABC)
Ty Pennington and his crew are getting a little rest. The network has cancelled the reality show but will still air it as occasional specials.

Free Agents (NBC)
The second NBC series of the new fall season to be pulled, this Hank Azaria sitcom fell to a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic, despite much stronger lead-ins. For whatever reason, audiences just rejected this one.

Friends with Benefits (NBC)
The peacock network delayed this sitcom until the middle of the summer, an indication that they had no faith in it. The ratings were indeed terrible and they only aired 12 of the 13 episodes.

H8R (The CW)
Hosted by Mario Lopez, this reality series matched celebrities with regular people who dislike them in the hopes of changing their perception. Few were interested.

The Hard Times of RJ Berger (MTV)
This high school series was barely renewed for a second season and the ratings only got worse in year two. Despite leaving some shocking and unresolved storylines without a conclusion, RJ and his pals won’t be back.

HawthoRNe (TNT)
Starring Jada Pinkett Smith, this medical drama lasted three seasons and ended on a major cliffhanger. Sadly it’s been cancelled and won’t be back.

House (FOX) NEW
After eight seasons, the decision has been made to end the venerable medical series.

How to Be a Gentleman (CBS)
The sitcom did decently by most standards but CBS has big hit comedies and new ones have to meet a high standard. CBS cut the season order to nine episodes, shut down production, and shipped the show to the Saturday night graveyard.

How to Make It in America (HBO)
Ben and Cam try to make it in the fashion industry but their show didn’t make it past season two.

Hung (HBO)
Ray Drecker (Thomas Jane) may be popular with the ladies but the cable channel tiered of his company. They’ve cancelled the show after three seasons and 30 episodes.

In Plain Sight (USA)
The cable channel has announced that season five will the last for Mary McCormack and company.

In the Flow with Affion Crockett (FOX)
The comedy sketch show ran during the summer months and didn’t generate much interest. It’s been canned and all six episodes have aired.

The Joy Behar Show (CNN)
Her cable show has come to an end but you can still see outspoken Behar weekday mornings on The View.

Lopez Tonight (TBS)
George Lopez’s sitcom ran for six seasons but his late-night talk show barely lasted two before being cancelled.

Love Bites (NBC)
This anthology series about amour was conceived to revolve around two women in search of love. Off-camera problems created delays, what aired was very different, and most people ignored it.

Man Up! (ABC)
This series was a ratings disappointment and dropped nearly every week it was on the air. ABC pulled it after eight episodes had aired and released the remaining five online.

The Martha Stewart Show (Hallmark)
The daytime show started as a syndicated series and was nearly cancelled but was picked up by Hallmark as part of a bigger deal. It wasn’t a success for Hallmark so they’ve canned it.

Memphis Beat (TNT)
Jason Lee and company won’t be back for a third round of episodes. The show was cancelled after two seasons on the air.

Men of a Certain Age (TNT)
Though beloved by some critics and viewers, this drama never caught on with a big audience and lasted just two seasons.

The Nate Berkus Show (syndicated)
The interior designer will finish out his second season but there won’t be a third year of episodes.

The Nine Lives of Chloe King (ABC Family)
This drama left viewers with cliffhangers but the ratings just weren’t good enough for them to make any more episodes.

One Tree Hill (The CW)
This venerable series has continued to endure despite some major cast changes. The network decided to pull the plug following the ninth and final season of 13 episodes.

The Playboy Club (NBC)
This NBC TV series stumbled right out of the gate and was pulled after three episodes. It wins the distinction of being the first network TV series to be cancelled of the fall crop.

Prime Suspect (NBC) NEW
The remake stumbled right out of the gate and the ratings just got worse. NBC aired all 13 episodes and had no reason to order any more.

The Protector (Lifetime)
A drama about a single-mom police detective, this TV series never caught on with a big audience and the cable channel decided not to order a second season.

Skins (MTV)
There was an uproar from some parents groups when this show premiered. That died off and so did viewer interest. It certainly didn’t help that many sponsors pulled their ads from the show. The cable channel cancelled it after one season.

State of Georgia (ABC Family)
The sitcom’s ratings were terrible so it was no surprise that the cable channel cancelled it after all 12 episodes had aired.

Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns (TBS)
This sitcom was based on Perry’s 2008 film comedy of the same name. It lasted for five seasons and 140 installments. The series ending aired on November 18, 2011.

Wizards of Waverly Place (Disney Channel) NEW
After four seasons, the three Russo kids have competed and one was crowned as the wizard of their generation. The series finale aired on January 6th.

Work It (ABC) NEW
This sitcom premiered to poor reviews and ratings. The numbers got even worse in week two so the network pulled it off the air. The extra episodes may surface over the summer if ABC has an empty slot.

What do you think? Are you surprised that any of these shows have been cancelled? Which one(s) will you miss the most?

Blue Mountain State: Cancelled; No Season Four

Posted by bryansarnold Comments (0)

The game is over for Coach Daniels (Ed Marinaro) and his team. There won’t be a fourth season for Blue Mountain State. The Spike TV series has been cancelled.

The comedy series revolves around the on and off-field antics of Pennsylvania college football powerhouse, Blue Mountain State. Coach Daniels has his hands full with the hijynx of his wife (Denise Richards) and students like team captain Thad (Alan Ritchson), quarterback Alex (Darin Brooks), and team mascot Sammy (Chris Romano).

The comedy performed decently for Spike in season one and realized significant gains in season two. The cable channel reported that the series saw a 33% increase with men 18-34, a 50% climb in men 18-24, and a 14% increase with men 18-49.

Total viewership dropped however in season three which kicked off this past September. While some episodes of season two had attracted 1.25 million viewers, at least one episode of season three garnered only half as many viewers. Spike TV aired the last two episodes of the season on November 30th. It turns out they’ll also be the last of the series as well.

Lionsgate, the studio that produces Blue Mountain State, apparently considered shopping the series to other outlets but it didn’t work out. The cast and crew were recently told that season four wouldn’t be happening.

While it’s been reported that the show was cancelled due to a decline in ratings, producer Eric Falconer says differently. He tweeted, “BMS wasn’t cancelled because of a drop in ratings. Season 3 was actually up 20% + in all male demographics vs S2. It was a budget issue.”

As recently as last week, Falconer was still hoping to hear that the show had been picked up for season four. However, it seems that State was actually living on borrowed time with Spike — even during season three. Last August, Spike TV executive VP Sharon Levy told Variety that the cable channel would be focusing on only non-scripted programming for the immediate future.

Of the cancellation news, Ritchson wrote, “Sad day for #BMS fans.” He followed that up with, “I can’t thank the dedicated cast, crew, and fans enough for all the love and support. Portraying Thad was a dream come true. I’m grateful.”

Brooks thanked the cast and crew and “everyone who made this show possible…a HUGE thank you!! Love you guys!!”

What do you think? Are you sorry that Blue Mountain State has been cancelled? Would you follow the show to another channel? Would you be interested in a BMS movie?
