In a statement from BBC America, Monaghan explained that this isn’t a new interest for him. “I have been obsessed and interested in nature all my life,” he said. “This show brings together years of excited preparation by finally creating a series that demonstrates my love for travel, animals, adventure and people.”

The latest original in a new slate from the anglophile cable net, Wild Things was co-commissioned by Canada’s OLN and the UK’s Channel 5. It’s being produced by Cream Productions and Wildfire Television and distributed internationally by ITV Studios Global Entertainment.

“Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan introduces our audience to creatures typically only seen in fantasy or science fiction,” said Perry Simon, BBC Worldwide America GM, channels. “We are among the many fans of Dominic’s work, and it is his genuine love and knowledge of these creatures and the production team’s global ambition that inspired us to make this series an important part of our slate of new originals.”

Comcast Launches Subscription VOD Service for Older TV, Movie Content

Posted by bryansarnold Comments (0)

NEW YORK – Comcast on Tuesday unveiled the launch of Xfinity Streampix, a new subscription streaming video service that allows existing video subscribers to access additional older film and TV content on multiple devices, including TV sets, online platforms and mobile devices.

’30 Rock’ Unleashes ‘Shit Liz Lemon Says’ (Video)Lionsgate Launches VOD Movie Service in China

Netflix has been a key provider of older video content online, with Comcast deepening its content offers in that space with its new service.

Disney-ABC Television Group, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution and Cookie Jar are initial content partners for the service, which will be included in many Comcast Xfinity triple-play and other video subscription packages and also be offered for $4.99 per month to other Comcast video customers.

The cable giant said that the service will allow “Xfinity video customers to instantly view favorite movies and TV shows in and out of the home, including numerous past seasons of current hit shows and full series.”

Xfinity Streampix complements Comcast’s offer of 75,000 TV shows and movies available on its Xfinity On Demand service, XfinityTV.com  and the Xfinity TV app.

“Xfinity TV is a one-stop source for the most video entertainment on any screen and it just keeps getting better,” said Marcien Jenckes, senior vp and general manager, video services at Comcast. “Our goal is to consistently deliver greater value to our customers and to bring the best anytime, anywhere entertainment on multiple platforms. Streampix is another step moving TV Everywhere forward by giving customers access to an even greater library of popular choices to watch.”

Comcast said the new service allows it to offer additional content, such as past full seasons of TV shows and library movie titles, and gives it more packaging flexibility.

Among content included in the service are past full seasons of 30 Rock, Grey’s Anatomy, Heroes, Married With Children and others, as well as such films as Analyze That, Brokeback Mountain and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Kids programming includes Inspector Gadget, Paddington Bear, Strawberry Shortcake and The Suite Life of Zack Cody.

All Hail ‘The Simpsons’ No Matter What Season

The Simpsons 500th Episode - H 2012

It was telling that at the end of the The Simpsons 500th episode, the writers put in a title card thanking viewers and saying they should go outside for some fresh air before logging on to the internet to say the episode sucked. For years now, one of the interweb’s most enduring memes – more so than the Hitler reworkings – is complaining about how The Simpsons isn’t as funny as it used to be.

THR Goes Behind the Scenes of ‘The Simpsons’ 500th Episode; Fans Set World Record (Exclusive Video)Bart, Homer, Conan and Michael Jackson: Behind the Scenes Stories From 500 Episodes of ‘The Simpsons’Behind the Scenes of THR’s ‘The Simpsons’ Cover Shoot

PHOTOS: The Making of ‘The Simpsons’

In fact, what’s most interesting these days about fans who continue to watch and then bitch, is asking them what season the laughs eroded. Eighth? 10th? Sixth? Everybody has an opinion.

And yes – this just in – The Simpsons isn’t as funny as it once was. I think when you make 500 episodes and turn your writing staff over as often as The Simpsons did, not to mention running out of or repeating ideas, then yes, a general creative slide might be anticipated. But every time there’s a landmark – and 500 episodes is a whopper of one – a little perspective is handy.

So what if The Simpsons isn’t as minute-to-minute brilliant as it once was? This show was Hall of Fame first ballot generations ago. It didn’t have to prove anything more. What’s impressive beyond the fact it still gets surprisingly good ratings for a show you can find pretty much anywhere in reruns while most die-hards have all the DVD boxed sets piled up on their shelves, is that it keeps getting up and going to work and we keep watching. (Or, in the case of a lot of former fans, not watching –though that automatically excludes them from complaining. You have to watch to participate.) But that notion – clocking in and getting it done – is admirable.

PHOTOS: ‘The Simpsons’ — Meet The Cast

I like to think of The Simpsons as a great sports hero that keeps playing because it/he/she still loves the game and still understands that it/he/she can still get it done sometimes. Hey, we wouldn’t have had that lovely couch montage without this episode. And there were some laughs to be had in The Outlands portion. And the secret town meeting was mostly good, plus the references to how their voices changed. The rest, well, whatever. I got a few laughs and that’s all I ever look for in The Simpsons these days. I just like knowing it’s still there. It still runs out on to the field. It doesn’t have the spring (see what I did there?) in the legs quite like it used to. It’s not going to dazzle at the same spectacular rate. But even after 500 episodes, it still has a little something left. And, come on, it’s not like Fox has found any other animated series that work and there’s probably a clause that people with Family Guy pedigree can only get so many time slots. So it’s not like The Simpsons is keeping Archer, let’s say, on the bench. Just because The Simpsons is on every Sunday doesn’t take away a slot from The Life Times of Tim and doesn’t cut into anything Adult Swim is doing.

So it’s kind of pointless to bitch about The Simpsons not being as funny as before. Not to mention it’s annoying. Like, off-the-charts annoying.

What we’re all witnessing is a television series like no other, one that has redefined the culture several times over and owned the zeitgeist longer than anything else of its kind. In short, The Simpsons is an institution, a television show that is well beyond description of its merits and successes anymore. Right now it just exists, and when it finally doesn’t, the same interwebs ablaze with “that really sucked” will be flip-flopping to bleating about how much they miss it. Even further out, there will be a generation that, with some distance, will view The Simpsons as a whole, a remarkably brilliant pop culture creation, and they won’t spend as much time nitpicking the late season quality decline.

I just don’t find any point or joy in bashing on quality degradation when it comes to The Simpsons. I take what they give me, just like I did in Season 1, episode 1. In Season 8, episode 1, and so on. After a while, having made enough points about why the show got away from what made it great, moved in directions that didn’t do justice to the early years, etc. etc., I just found the rant to be of little use. I began to take what they offered and felt good about the laughs I got. Some weeks, more than others. But what has kept me going just as it has for some many others, is the characters. For a long time now it hasn’t been about the main ones. I like the fringe characters and when I see them, I still laugh, sometimes before they say anything. And if they say anything funny, even better. A bonus.

The Simpsons is now, and has been for decades, a pop culture institution, an animated legend. That it has gone on for 500 episodes – and more coming – can only be seen as a gift. I can find funnier shows elsewhere, but when I want The Simpsons, not only can I pull the DVDs off the shelves and laugh, but I can watch the 500th episode and get a couple more as well. Why would anyone want that to end?

After the show abruptly went dark last week, The Colbert Report will resume production on Monday, a representative from the show confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

Tapings on Feb. 15 and 16 were canceled at the last minute, with ticket holders invited to re-apply for a future taping. Some fans were already lining up at the show’s Manhattan studio — and some were even in their seats — when Comedy Central sent an e-mail Wednesday alerting ticket holders to the cancellation.

Stephen Colbert did not release an official reason for the sudden cancellation of tapings, but reports surfaced that said it was due to his 91-year-old mother’s ailing health. Comedy Central would only say that the tapings were canceled due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

On Friday, Colbert tweeted to his fans: “My family and I would like to thank everyone who has offered their thoughts and prayers. We are grateful and touched by your concern.”

This week’s guests include Ann Patchett, owner of Parnassus Books on Monday, Robert Kagan, author of The World America Made on Tuesday and Nancy Pelosi, minority leader of the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

Yolanda Adams Whitney Houston tribute

The NAACP had more lead time than the Grammys to honor the late Whitney Houston at their annual Image Awards on Friday night.

Six days after the singer’s sudden death — and on the eve of her funeral — the show pulled a similar move to the Grammys by acknowledging her at the top of the two-hour broadcast and saving the full tribute for near the end of the show.

Houston’s was the last name to appear last on the “in memoriam” reel, which featured Elizabeth Taylor and Don Cornelius among many others, before hosts Sanaa Lathan and Anthony Mackie introduced a clip package of Houston’s most memorable moments at the Image Awards.

They showed her getting the 1995′s “Entertainer of the Year” award, accepting “Best Actress” for The Preacher’s Wife and being serenaded by mother Cissy Houston.

Finally, Yolanda Adams took the stage. Backed by a full Baptist choir, she sang “I Love the Lord” to a rapt crowd of visibly tearful guests at the Shrine Auditorium.

After Adams’ standing ovation, gospel singer Kirk Franklin began his own show-concluding number with a rendition of “The Greatest Love of All.”

Pat Buchanan Officially Out at MSNBC

Posted by bryansarnold Comments (0)

After months of speculation, Pat Buchanan and MSNBC have severed their relationship.

Buchanan made the announcement himself in a blog post Thursday on The American Conservative titled “Blacklisted, But Not Beaten.”

“After 10 enjoyable years, I am departing, after an incessant clamor from the left that to permit me continued access to the microphones of MSNBC would be an outrage against decency, and dangerous,” Buchanan wrote.

An MSNBC spokesperson added: “After ten years, we’ve decided to part ways with Pat Buchanan. We wish him well.”

Buchanan has been conspicuously absent from the network since last October. And his most recent book, Suicide of a Superpower, in which he inveighs against immigration, has been the explanation for his banishment. And Buchanan writes: “The calls for my firing began immediately with the Oct. 18 publication” of his book.

PHOTOS: 11 Children’s Movies With Political Agendas? You Betcha, Say Conservatives

In fact, Buchanan has been a lightning rod for some time. Remarks many considered racist and anti-Semitic made him a frequent target of interest groups including Color of Change and The Anti-Defamation League. (He’s called Hitler “an individual of great courage” and criticized Elena Kagan’s appointment to the Supreme Court thusly: “If Kagan is confirmed, Jews, who represent less than 2 percent of the U.S. population, will have 33 percent of the Supreme Court seats.”)

Nevertheless, Buchanan is well-liked personally by many colleagues at MSNBC who say that he always graciously accommodated appearance requests despite being on a yearly, rather than a per-appearance, contract. And he had some important allies at MSNBC, notably Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough.

In fact, Buchanan himself credited the show with making him more likable to the wider public.

“He would come in and say, ‘People are hugging me in airports. I could have used you guys when I ran for president,’” recalls a Morning Joe insider. “He went from being this screaming, crazy, right-wing guy to like your grandfather because Joe knew how to use him. He has this unbelievable institutional knowledge of the conservative movement. He has forgotten more than most of these so-called pundits will ever know.”

PHOTOS: Keith Olbermanns Famous Feuds

But having Buchanan on the air became increasingly untenable, says another source. “The elephant in the room is his crazy politics.”

MSNBC president Phil Griffin has described Buchanan’s views as “alarming.”

Buchanan himself never actually acknowledged the suspension while it was happening. Asked about it last January during an appearance on a radio show hosted by evangelical Republican Hugh Hewitt, Buchanan said health problems had kept him out of circulation for several weeks, but that the suspension was news to him. “On Drudge Report, somebody said I’ve been suspended,” he told Hewitt. “I don’t know anything about that.”

PHOTOS 10 Media Missteps of 2011

Buchanan – a Republican and key advisor in the administrations of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan – had been a regular contributor on MSNBC since 2002. He was part of the network’s 2008 presidential primary coverage where he often sat next to Rachel Maddow. That odd couple pairing continued – though with much less frequency – when Maddow got her own primetime show in September 2008. Buchanan and Maddow had multiple clashes on The Rachel Maddow Show’s “It’s Pat” segments. One discussion in July 2009 about Sonya Sotomayor’s nomination to the Supreme Court became particularly heated. Buchanan called Sotomayor an “affirmative action appointment” and explained that “affirmative action is to increase diversity by discriminating against white males.” Maddow disagreed. And the following evening she fact-checked some of Buchanan’s statement, offering a pointed rebuttal of his assertions that “this has been a country built basically by white folks,” though he did not appear on the program.

The publication of Suicide of a Superpower brought a new round of incoming fire at MSNBC. Abraham Foxman, national director of The Anti-Defamation League, publicly urged MSNBC to reconsider its relationship with Buchanan.

“It is especially disturbing that [Buchanan] continues to be given a platform to espouse his views at a mainstream network like MSNBC, where he is presented as a knowledgeable and respected analyst,” said Foxman in a statement last November. “Buchanan continues to show his true colors by espousing hateful, bigoted statements in his new book.”

PHOTOS: Rachel Maddow’s Feuds

It’s unclear how much time Buchanan had left on his MSNBC contract. But many at the network expect him to find a perch on another cable news channel. Said one: “I guarantee you, they let him out of his deal at MSNBC, ten minutes later, [Fox News chairman] Roger Ailes picks him up.”

‘Eureka’s’ Colin Ferguson to Star in Bill Lawrence’s Fox Comedy

Eureka‘s Colin Ferguson has found his next gig.

TV Pilots 2012: The Complete GuideComic-Con 2011: ‘Eureka’s’ Colin Ferguson (QA)‘Eureka’ Canceled: Syfy Reverses Its Decision on Season 6 Renewal

The star of the Syfy drama — which will kick off its fifth and final season in April — has been tapped to star in Like Father, the Fox comedy pilot loosely inspired by Cougar Town co-creator Bill Lawrence‘s relationship with his father.

The single-camera project, which will be written, directed and executive produced by Lawrence, revolves around 19-year-old Will Lyons who comes of age in the shadow of his 39-year-old father, Van (Ferguson) as his dad infiltrates his college life and influences his friends.

Ferguson stars as Sheriff Jack Carter on Syfy’s Eureka, which the cable network canceled in August after briefly committing to an abbreviated sixth season. Lawrence has long wanted to work with the actor, whose credits also include episodes of My Boys and CSI: Miami, but his commitment to the Syfy series made it logistically impossible.

He’s repped by Oscars Abrams Zimel Associates and Jackoway Tyerman.

The third season of Lawrence’s ABC comedy Cougar Town premiered this week after initially being left off ABC’s midseason schedule, returning to lackluster ratings. Eureka returns in April to Syfy.

Warner Bros. Lawyers Send Cease-and-Desist Letter to Charlie Sheen (Exclusive)

Charlie Sheen

Warner Bros. isn’t quite over its bitter breakup with Charlie Sheen.

Lawyers for the Two and a Half Men studio, which in September settled Sheen’s $100 million wrongful termination lawsuit over his firing from the hit sitcom, have sent a cease and desist letter to the actor, the FX network and production company Debmar-Mercury demanding that they stop using Warners-owned photos in connection with his upcoming comedy Anger Management.

PHOTOS: Charlie Sheen’s Colorful Career

At least two shots of Sheen from his Men days—including one featuring the actor posed on a motorcycle—were included in a promotional publication distributed in January at the NATPE conference in Miami, where Sheen and his new partners were busy pitching the June debut of their show to domestic and international buyers.

Harmless mistake? Copyright infringement, says Warners (statutory damages can run $150,000 per infraction, according to federal law).

“That you are using Warner’s intellectual property for a commercial purpose – namely, to sell another show – is especially egregious,” studio lawyer Katherine Chilton wrote in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. “Please immediately cease and desist from using these photographs or any other intellectual property belonging to Warner.”

FX, Debmar-Mercury and Sheen attorney Marty Singer declined to comment, but a source close to Anger Management says the use of the Men images was inadvertent and occurred only because Sheen, who has been busy casting the show with writer-producer Bruce Helford, hasn’t had a chance to take new publicity photos.

“It won’t happen again,” says the source, meaning we likely won’t see another nasty legal war.
